Birkenau
Birkenau was the largest part of the Auschwitz complex. Camp was begun in 1941, on the site of the village of Brzezinks. Over 90,000 prisoners were held in Birkenau in 1944. Poles living near the camp were evicted starting in 1940 through 1941.
The picture above shows a monument to the Victims of Fascism at Birkenau. Plaque states: Forever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity where the Nazis murdered one and a half million people.
